DENTAL VENEERS AND LAMINATS

What are ceramic veneers?

Veneers are thin ceramic shells which are bonded, i.e. cemented to the front surface of the teeth efficiently changingtheir colour, shape, size / length. They are used to improve the aesthetics of a person’s teeth and smile.

What are ceramic laminates?

Laminates are types of veneers that are cemented to the surface of the teeth which do not need to be drilled (non-prep), as opposed to conventional veneers which require previous drilling of the front surface of the teeth.

The advantages of veneers over other prosthetic restorations:

The main advantage of veneers over other prosthetic restorations is that they require minimal drilling of the front surface of the tooth (veneers) or no drilling at all (laminates).

The structure of the material that veneers are built from, as well as their properties, especially optical ones, closely resemble those of the tooth enamel (the outer layer of the tooth) which makes them an ideal enamel restoration.

Veneers are considered the pinnacle of aesthetic dentistry for they can make a person’s smile perfect. They do not change colour, and are viewed as ‘the gentlest’ restoration to gum tissues.

When to opt for ceramic veneers?

Veneers are indicated primarily to correct minor aesthetic deficiencies, such as: dark-coloured teeth, teeth discoloration, inadequate teeth size, uneven teeth surface, minor teeth fractures, minor misalignment (slightly rotated teeth, gaps between teeth…). It is important to know that veneers can only be placed onto natural non-treated teeth since there has to be a sufficient amount of healthy enamel (using veneers on teeth with large caries or/and fillings is contraindicated).

In order to find out whether you are a good candidate for veneers fill out the online questionnaire or schedule a free appointment / consultation so we can diagnose and analyse the condition of Your teeth and find the best functional-aesthetic solution for You.

What are composite veneers?

Veneers can also be made from composite material (material used for making fillings). They are made by using a free-hand bonding techniquedirectly in a dental office, so there is no need to use a dental laboratory. Composite veneers can significantly improve the teeth aesthetics and are more affordable. However, when it comes to quality, durability and aesthetics, ceramic veneers are far more superior.

The procedure for making dental veneers:

  1. After the initial examination and diagnostics to determine whether there are indications for a dental bridge, an arrangement is made about the future work and then a work plan, appointment schedule and production timeline are organised.
  2. The next step is drilling. Dental veneers require minimal drilling on the front side of the teeth and slight shortening. If realignment is necessary, drilling is adjusted. In case some teeth need to be enlarged or lengthened, no drilling is necessary (laminates are then made).

During the same visit, the dentist will take the impressions of the current teeth condition and the aesthetically acceptable provisional veneers will be made. The impressions are then sent to the dental lab where the dental veneers will be fabricated.

  1. During the next visit, the dentist will place the veneers to see whether they fit, and if the patient is satisfied, veneers are cemented into place. If any adjustments are needed, the veneers are sent back to the dental lab and cemented on once the patient is completely satisfied with them.
  2. The whole procedure of fabricating dental veneers from drilling and to cementing them into place usually takes about 7-10 days, butif necessary it can be done in 3-4 days .

What to think about before making dental veneers?

If you want to improve the aesthetics of your natural teeth in the zone of smile, veneers might be the perfect solution. However, the indications for veneers are limited and it must be the dentist who will determine whether they are the best solution for your condition.

Before you decide to get veneers, we advise You to think about the desired colour of Your futuresmileand to what extent you want to correct it. This is important because it greatly affects the decision on how many teeth will be covered by veneers, and whether the remaining teeth need to be whitened.

If you suffer from some form of bruxism (teeth grinding, jaw clenching…) it is important to inform your dentist about it before getting dental veneers. After cementation, it will be necessary to make a night guard or a splint (find out more about splints here) that will protect Your teeth and veneers from damaging (fracturing or decementation).

What to do after making dental veneers?

Immediately after cementation, it is not recommended to eat for an hour. When the anaesthetic wears off, You might feel soreness and thermal sensitivity (hot, cold). Mild sensitivity is absolutely normal and will disappear in about 1-2 weeks. It is important to maintain proper oral hygiene. Asoft brush isrecommended which can be used to massage the gums without having to worry about damaging them. A few days after cementation, we recommended You pay moreattention to Your gums (using Gengigel is advisable). Use dentalfloss. About a week after the treatment, a check-up will be necessary which is extremely important to detect possible problems such as premature occlusal contacts when biting or sliding your teeth against each other, soft tissue response, etc.

It is important to carefully follow the instructions given by Your dentist to make your veneers last longer.

What is the expected lifespan of dental veneers?

Dental veneers last between 5-10 years provided that you carefully follow the instructions of Your doctor of dental medicine. If you suffer from bruxism, make sure you wear mouth splints, avoid biting off and tearing hard food, do not bite nails, chew ice, pencils and other items.
